Saling across Southern New England
Greetings from Rhode Island!
We're overnighting in the historic town of Newport, RI - a sailing mecca, and major US Naval submarine site. City of the vacationing rich of past centuries, it also features huge, fantastic mansions, lots of shops, restaurants..... you know, that sort of thing. It's charming. I am glad, though, that we are here in the off-season, as the streets are narrow, and I imagine it all gets pretty overrun in the summer. And, if the number of moorings is a clue, there are hundreds of boats here in the season, too. Duh - there's even a street called "Americas Cup Way"
We spent most of the day meandering across southern Connecticut, sticking mostly to the backroads as much as possible. (only on I-95 for about 10 minutes, tops!) We set out from Tarrytown, and took the Merritt Parkway from NY State into the Constitution State. What a beautiful drive! Nothing but decidious trees and creative, classy overpasses. It was well worth the trip.
Side trip to Sikorsky Airport in Bridgeport (what a surprise! an airport!), and then we continued on eastward. Next up: New Haven. We waved at Yale University on the way by, and stopped off in East Haven for lunch at a genuine diner :-)
Then, we spent the afternoon winding through wetlands, marshlands, and the occasional glimpse of the Atlantic. Parts of Highway 1 resembled Seattle's Highway 99, in a way, but other parts are nicely rural. We took several of the back roads also, which were really pretty. And yes, we went through Mystic, CT (but no pizza, ha!)
Cruised across the southern part of Rhode Island (there are more people in RI than in MT!) and across a couple of cool bridges, and on into Newport, just where the fog was rolling in.
It's been a great start to the trip.
Forgot to mention something from yesterday - we shared the security line at Sea-Tac with the Dartmouth crew returning home from the Opening Day festivities at UDub. That was fun.
Anyway, tomorrow - who knows? That's the best part.
Cheers,
-Kit & Nancy
